Abstract

The objectives of this article were to develop a group counseling program to enhance family function in promoting active aging for elderly caregivers and to study the effectiveness of group counseling on enhancing family function in promoting active aging for elderly caregivers. A one-group pretest–posttest design was used in this research. The target group consisted of 30 family members who took care of the elderly at home in Nam Jo Municipality, Mae Tha District, Lampang Province. The subjects were specifically selected based on the criteria set out to be active caregivers for the elderly and willing to participate in the research voluntarily. The instruments consisted of 1) Data collection tools were group discussion, unstructured interview form and family functioning scale in promoting active aging for elderly. 2) The research instrument was a group counseling program to enhance the performance of family functions in enhancing the empowerment of the elderly. The statistics used in data analysis were mean and standard deviation. The results can be summarized as follows: 1) The group counseling program to enhance family function in promoting active aging for elderly caregivers was developed from a concept and techniques of Rational Emotive Behavior Theory. There were 8 sessions of group counseling program, each program consists of 3 steps: introduction, action and concluding. 1) After taking part in the group counseling, the elderly caregivers had family function score higher than before participating the program. At the end of follow-up, the caregivers of the elderly had family function score higher than before participating the program.
